Formal Letter based on a given situation -- CBSE Class 10

Write a letter to the Commissioner of Police of your city requesting him to organise traffic rules awareness week for the general public. You are Aman/ Amita, 25, Adarsh Nagar, Lucknow.

The Commissioner of Police
Lucknow Commissionerate
Lucknow

Subject: Request to organise 'Traffic Rules Awareness Week'

Sir,
I am writing to you to bring your attention towards the rising indifference among the riders of our city towards road safety and awareness of traffic rules. This has become a major problem of Lucknow that's far from being controlled.
Lives of thousands of riders, bystanders and pedestrians are endangered by the irresponsible behaviour of some careless riders. We can witness an increasing trend of over-speeding in almost all areas of the city, a few like Vidhan Bhawan Road being an exception due to the high number of traffic policemen deployed there.
The problem does not end at over-speeding. Many teenagers below the age of 18 are driving their parents' vehicles without valid driver's licence. Also, no use of the traffic signals and signal timers, which were installed after huge expenditure by the government, is seen because there are no traffic policemen who fine the violators. The CCTV cameras which have been installed to check the culprits aren't just doing enough good.
There is a pressing need to educate the riders of the city and make them aware of traffic rules, because they have either forgotten them or they happily engage in deliberate lawlessness by disregarding them. For this very purpose, I want to request you to plan and organise a 'Traffic Rules Awareness Week' and maximize its benefit by giving it wide publicity through various media.

Yours sincerely
Aman

A Tiger in the Zoo -- CBSE Class 10 -- Summary and analysis

The poem is a remarkable piece of writing which addresses a relevant universal theme. The poet has juxtaposed the life of a tiger in the concrete cell of a zoo with his life of freedom in a jungle. (Juxtaposition means when two things or situations are placed close to each other for the purpose of stark comparison.)

In the first stanza we see the tiger's suppressed voice from the zoo. He is in a helpless state where he can only walk the length of his concrete cell. His anger is also suppressed as he cannot do anything about his pitiable state. An animal which commands so much of respect and fear not only from animals but also from human beings, is entirely at the mercy of the zoo-keepers.

In the second and third stanzas, the tiger is seen living a life of complete liberty in a jungle. He waits in ambush to hunt "plump deer" for his meal. He "snarls around houses at the jungle's edge" showing his sharp teeth. This sound, let alone sight, is enough to terrorize the villagers living near the jungle. The tiger is considered a figure of fear. This is how he is supposed to be.

In the last two stanzas, we see the tiger in a pitiable state. He is locked in his "concrete cell". It is ironical that we feel bad for animals when we read poems but enjoy the sight whenever we visit the zoo. The tiger in his cell even ignores the visitors as he no longer derives pleasure from watching them in captivity.

His last activity in the night before he retires to sleep is listening to the sound of patrolling cars. It is an irony that this safe and secure environment of the zoo cannot bring any solace to the tiger. His only respite is watching the open sky full of stars from his cell, probably the only experience that matches his life in the jungle.

It is imperative for us to realize that a tiger loses its natural ability to hunt when he loses his natural habitat. He becomes an object of pity from being an object of fear. If he is taken back to the jungle, he won't unfortunately be able to survive there.

Character Sketch - Anil - A Thief's Story - Class 10 (Footprints Without Feet)

Anil was a mature and thoughtful man. He was a man of patience. When Hari asked him for work by trying to flatter him, we see that he gives him work not because he was flattered by his antics, but because he saw Hari was a boy whose life he could improve in some way.

He wrote for a magazine and earned by "fits and starts". He was extravagant too as he spent his money lavishly when he earned it. His earnings were not regular. Though he did not pay Hari initially, he always knew he was giving him enough for buying daily supplies, and Hari, the clever teen was saving a part of it for himself (a rupee).

He wanted to improve Hari's quality of life because what he gave him was more than meagre salary. He taught him basic arithmetic and how to write sentences. Though initially Hari did not realise what he was getting from him, but in the end of the story we definitely see Hari was grateful to him.

When Hari ran away with Anil's earning of 600 rupees, it is evident that Anil had an idea of what had happened. Still he does not oust him rather decides to pay him regularly. He probably understood Hari wanted money to be loyal to him. However Anil's thoughtfulness brings a great change in Hari. His patience and purity win Hari's heart.

Indeed, goodness goes a long way. Its ripples touch many people.
